Old Times with Playing PS2 Games on Your PS3

If you own a PS3, there is a pretty good chance that you have a number of Playstation and Playstation 2 titles lying around somewhere. Sometimes, you might like to go back and play a number of those classics. Although they don’t look nearly as nice as current gen games, they can still provide hours and hours of entertainment. It’s very understandable to want to go back and relive such great gaming moments as Aerith’s death in Final Fantasy VII or beginning to unravel the extensive plot of the MGS series in Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3. Playing PS2 games on your PS3 can be fun, although you might not be able to depending on which model you own.

Which Models Can and Which Can’t

Not all Playstation 3 models can play PSX or PS2 games. You won’t be able to play PS2 games on your PS3 if you own the 40 Gb model or new 80 Gb or 160 Gb models. The 20 Gb, original 80 Gb, and 60 Gb models all support backwards compatibility, so if that is a great concern of yours, then you won’t be able to buy either of the two new models. If you search long and hard, you might be able to find unused consoles from previous generations of the PS3, but chances are that you’ll need to buy used PS3s to play PS2 games on your PS3.

However, there is some hope for playing PS2 games on your PS3 even if you don’t have backwards compatibility. Sony is adding more and more classic titles to its online store, and you can download more and more PSX and PS2 games directly to your hard drive. Although they are technically built for the PSX and PS2, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on your PS3 regardless of having backwards compatibility enabled or not.

Of course, if you don’t want to repurchase your old games, you can simply pick up a used PS2 for almost nothing. You can often get them for as little as $20 or $30, although their longevity can’t be assured if they’ve been used extensively already. However, they often come with short, several month-long warranties so that if they stop working in, say, 90 days or so, you can return them for a replacement. Still, they are inexpensive to replace if they do stop working, so if you can’t play PS2 games on your PS3, you still have a cheap alternative.
