An Increase in PS3 Game Titles

When it was first released, Sony’s Playstation 3 was criticized for having a dearth of big titles to purchase. Any game system is only as strong as its library of available titles, and admittedly, the PS3 was sorely lacking in this department. In the years since its release though, the PS3 has gotten many fantastic and popular titles, from the Grand Theft Auto’s latest to Metal Gear Solid 4. All in all, the PS3 has picked up dozens of AAA titles, and combined with the PS3′s unparalleled graphical and general computing prowess, all of the PS3 games make for a gaming heaven.

The Future from Blu-ray

Although digital distribution is making some strides, people still prefer physical media. Blu-ray is the most advanced physical media available to the market, and by allowing PS3 games to fit several times the amount of data, they are able to achieve higher resolution textures, higher bit-rate audio, and other benefits that the competition can’t match. As the architecture of the Playstation 3 is better learned and and appreciated, game developers can pour even more high definition content into the games at no cost to performance, giving PS3 games even more of an edge.

Unfortunately, this same great technology that gives the PS3 a technical advantage forces it to also have a cost disadvantage. Blu-ray technology is more expensive to produce currently than DVDs, and it will be a year or two yet before the pricing is the same. However, all next gen titles typically retail for $60 USD, regardless of console, when they first come out. Because of royalties and the like, console games also typically cost about $10 more than new PC games, but buying a computer that is capable of Playstation 3 level graphics will cost you several hundred more dollars than the cost of a new PS3, making PS3 games cheaper in the end.

PS3 games provide hours and hours of entertainment, and multiplayer functionality adds hours more of replay value as gamers compete all around the world. Traditionally single player franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid are all making forays into the online gaming world, and while totally online games like World of WarCraft and Left 4 Dead have not yet made the transition to the PS3, it’s safe to expect to see some online-only games coming to the PS3 in the coming years. Most of the biggest new titles are available on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, such as Final Fantasy XIII, but the PS3 has some exclusives to give it extra allure.
